We perform in concert usually on a Saturday evening, but occasionally mid- week in support of other events. The Choir rehearses on a Thursday evening between 19:30 hrs and 21:30 hrs, with breaks over the summer, Christmas and Easter – altogether around 40 rehearsal nights per annum. We are therefore wishing to engage an experienced MD who is excited by this challenge. We wish to re-invigorate these themes and to present the Choir as an exciting and worthwhile group to be a member of for men of all ages. Since forming in 1962 the Choir has maintained a strong emphasis on the enjoyment of singing and in support of organisations raising money for charitable or good causes. The Choir repertoire includes classical, sacred, established popular music and music from the folk tradition. We are a non-auditioned choir of around 30 singers, with aspirations to increase membership to pre-pandemic numbers of 40+. The director will normally accompany the choir in rehearsal where required. They will lead the choir musically and be able to maintain and develop the standard of performance, and will work in conjunction with the committee in planning concerts and in the general running of the choir. We are looking for a director who has considerable experience in choral conducting, a wide range of repertoire and a progressive outlook. Our choral year is from September to June/July We give around 6 concerts a year (in 4 programmes), usually in Cambridge or a surrounding village and occasionally go on short tours in England and abroad. Rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesday evenings in Cambridge. The choir also commissions and premieres works from their New Music fund and New Cambridge Songs scheme. We perform a cappella music from all periods and often work with an organist or occasionally with small professional instrumental groups. The choir has around 35 singers, membership being by audition. With the forthcoming retirement of Graham Walker in summer 2023 we are looking for an experienced choral director to start working with the choir in January 2024.
